SARAC’s Youth Team Expands, Increasing Education and Awareness for Young People
Our Youth Team has increased, we have 2 additional staff members who have joined the team, headed up by the Service Lead, Caroline Fotheringham.
The passionate team is made up of Ryan Selby, Stevie Bea, Alix Morris, Rochelle Brown and Caroline herself. Together, this team support our mission at SARAC, to provide education and awareness of sexual abuse to young people in and around Burton. Offering schools, and other educational settings, the chance to inform young people about concepts such as consent, healthy relationships, effects of pornography, legal definitions and myths surrounding rape.
Education about sexual assault works towards removing the stigma that prevents young people seeking help, it reduces the likelihood of sexual offences being committed, and it increases the chance of young people receiving the support that they might desperately need.
Our team offers free awareness sessions as a part of the crucial youth work that is conducted at SARAC. These sessions are for staff and/or students who are 11 and over, at schools and colleges in Burton and the surrounding areas. Education and awareness is just as important for staff as it is for pupils. By giving staff the tools to understand sexual abuse, recognise it, and be able to provide education to their students regarding it, there is a foundation of knowledge that will set the students up to understand it better themselves.
Our Youth Team go into schools, and work collaboratively with staff and students to teach the topics of sexual abuse and allow an open space for questions. Starting education with young people stands society in a better place to protect the next generation from trauma and promotes compassion.
